PMBJP Scheme in India
Advantage of PMBJP Scheme in India
It is well known that generic drugs are available at considerably higher prices in India. Given the widespread poverty across the world, having available on the market reasonably priced quality drugs will help everybody, particularly the poor and the vulnerable. This has always been a big concern of the Government of India. “Jan Aushadhi” is a novel initiative introduced by the Government of India in 2008 for a noble cause – Quality Medicines at Affordable Prices for Everyone. The campaign was launched through the selling of generic drugs through exclusive outlets, Pradhan Mantri Janaushadhi Kendra, in different districts of the country. The first “Pradhan Mantri Janaushadhi Kendra” was opened at Amritsar in Punjab on 25th November 2008. Initially, it was suggested that the PMBJP scheme Campaign be launched during the 11th Five Year Plan era beginning in 2008-09, with the objective of extending at least one Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras in each of the 630 districts of the country to sub-divisional levels as well as to major towns and village centers by 2012. It was envisaged that the project would operate on a self-sustaining business model and would not rely on government incentives or assistance beyond initial funding. It was to be run on the “No profit, No harm” philosophy.
